Italian Textiles in Czarist Russia –

For more textile-related goodies from The New York Times check out this recent article on a current show at the Textile Museum in Prato Italy. The show is entitled “The Style of the Czar: Art and Fashion between Italy and Russia from the 14th to the 18th Century” .

Above, an Italian silk tapestry from the 16th century. I love the combination of the yellow green and the dark jade.

French Velvet at The Lotus Collection –

The website of Kathleen Taylor’s textile company The Lotus Collection has been re-organized since I last visited several months ago and it’s definitely worth looking at anew. Above, a French voided velvet (circa 1890).

Mirella Spinella –

Venetian based textile designer Mirella Spinella has an amazing collection of  jewel tone velvets in patterns that will put you in the center of the spice trade, circa 1500.

Within the United States you can purchase (or pine over) her wares at Sue Fisher King. Prices are not for the faint of heart.

Framed Scarves –

The August cover of  The World Of Interiors (detail above) features the Indian apartment of David Earp, a native of London who moved to Calcutta 11 years ago and since founded a charity there – Shuktara – for children in need. His love of textiles is in bright display throughout the magazine’s eight-page spread (text and photography by Henry Wilson), most especially Earp’s amazing collection of framed scarves:

“The stunning framed scarves that hang on all the walls demand attention. Most of them are by Ascher or Jacqmar, the majority woven in rayon and designed by such luminaries as Cecil Beaton, Oliver Messel and Feliks Topolski…”

Lisa Corti –

It’s finally starting to feel a bit like summer in San Francisco but for anyone stuck for the moment with dreary weather (or a dreary schedule, or too much bad news on TV) Lisa Corti offers a perfect escape to a land of vibrant, life-affirming color.

New House Textiles –

I’m generally not a huge fan of “retro Scandinavian chic” (as New House dubs it) but the company has opened my heart to the category just a little with their Homewares Collection, featuring simple designs like Herring (above) as well as Sweet Heart and Red Fox.

Virginia Di Sciascio –

If you ever find yourself wanting to spend a significant amount of money on an antique pillow, you should definitely check out Virginia Di Sciasio’s antique textiles website. The description for the one shown above is as follows:

Early 19th century antique Italian silk flame stitching in shades of gold and slate blue on a cream colored background, hand applied onto a modern Italian silk velvet and backed in modern linen. Hand stitched brown and blue cords at top and bottom borders. Excellent Condition. Pair Available.

$1800, each.

Maria Likarz Strauss –

I thought I’d start out the week with a look into the history books — what I found was this print by Maria Likarz Strauss (1893-1956), a prolific textile designer of the Wiener Werkstatte. It’s little swatches like this that express the vibrancy of previous eras and remind me that “modern design” is not a recent invention.
